The Northwoods
2003
paper, leather, copper, enamel. 6"x9"
The Northwoods is hand-sewn
and bound with leather and flour paste. The decorations on the cover
are enamel plaques in the shape of fishing spoons, but their festive
decoration is reminiscent of the bright shield heraldry of a forgotten
era. Inside, the book contains 4 stories of the exploits of a
young man in the deep woods of Upper Michigan- my father's story, in
his own words. When I read these words, I am transported back to his
place, many years ago- yet it is the same place that I am in now in my
life. There exists a curious connection between the "then" and the
"now", and it is often hard to see where one ends and the other begins.
In the fall, I sometimes return with my father to those same stream and
woods he once fished, and we cast our lines together.
