So I had this great idea that I would get some old tires and make a tire swing for the neighborhood kids that are always hanging around our yard. This is tricky; there are lots of old tires lying around in Santa Eulalia, but no one here has a car, so Temux is a tire desert. I talked one of the microbus drivers into letting me bring three back with me from Santa Eulalia (for a slight fee), and now they rest in my yard, awaiting the next step. But lo and behold, the words of my friend Jerry Hoffman are once again proven correct: kids don’t need fancy toys to have a good time; for most, a cardboard box will do. Or an old tire, in this case. Now the kids come by every day to play with our tires. Things were getting rowdy last night, and Emily had to lay down the law at one point, saying “pueden jugar con las llantas, pero necisitan devolverlos cuando terminan,” or, You may play with the tires, but be sure to return them when you’re done. (For you Spanish speakers, the Guatemalans NEVER use the vosotros form)
