Hello again.
This is a quick post to let everyone know that we’re going to be arriving at our permanent site in Huehuetenango a day later than planned. Emily has contracted some sort of exotic illness, and we have to stay near civilization until monday morning so they can run some tests. It doesn’t appear to be life-threatening, but it is definitely uncomfortable for her and makes it impossible to do 10 hours in crowded buses. Right now, she is sleeping.
In addition, this post is also to test a change in the blogging system we’re using (thanks Brian). We are going to be without reliable internet until late August, so please be patient if we’re bad about replying to email during that time. However, the local cellular phone provider is starting cellular broadband in our area starting August 15, and it looks like it will be within our price range and there will be a tower visible from our remote valley, so we should be good about communicating after that (for the first time since we’ve been here).
For your amusement, here we are working at one of the few cafes in Antigua that has WiFi. The back room of this place is usually packed with Gringoes and their Macintosh laptops (no kidding; about 75% of peace corps volunteers as well as freewheeling travellers use Macs. Go figure). If i did this post right, you can click on the image to enlarge it and see how nerdy we are with our two laptops plugged into the outlet below the table, a comfy Mac couple.
Entonces, nos vemos, y escribiré otro mensaje en el último parte de Agosto.
UPDATE: The lab results are back, and she has amoebic dysentery! The treatment regimen is about 20 days of a few different kinds of pills, so we now have a big box to take back with us to our site.
