NOAA/
Hatfield Marine Science Center
Newport, Oregon 2002
$4.5 million oceanic research station, office,
and warehouse
|
My
coworker Trace Ward and I worked as a team on this project: he
undertook the onerous task of specifying and administering this federal
government project, leaving me with the much simpler task of fleshing
out the design, coordinating consultants, and making the set of
construction documents. We had to please a tricky user group of
government and scientific clients and provide a solid, durable, yet
beautiful building that could withstand years of harsh marine
environment, treacherous Zone 4 earthquakes, and tsunami risk.

We worked with the clients (who
conduct oceanic environmental research) and one of our
consultants, Dougherty Landscape Architects, to create an
appropriate micro-ecosystem around the facitility.
